The Program

Rochester’s Vertus Charter High School for young men is a successful study in innovative design and entrepreneurial practice. The challenge? 57% of Rochester’s black and Latino males drop out of high school. Why? Traditional urban high schools struggle to provide their young men with the high expectations, structure, nurture, role models, and personalized instruction they need to succeed. At Vertus, students learn online and in small groups. With Vertus’ unique staffing model, over 50% of its faculty are men of color. Since opening in 2014, on nationally normed reading and math assessments, students on average exceed expected annual gains by 200%.

The Presenter

Leigh McGuigan is CEO of Vertus High School. Prior to co-founding Vertus, she worked with state departments of education and urban school districts to improve educator performance; was Senior Executive for New and Innovative Schools in the Cleveland school district, and founded the Office of School Leadership for the NYC Department of Education. Before her career in education, Leigh was Senior Managing Director and Litigation Director at Bank One (now part of JPMorgan Chase), and practiced law at the Washington, D.C. firm of Arnold & Porter. Leigh holds a B.A. from Duke University, a J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Ohio State.
