Tool Name | Source | Description | Instructional Media |
---|---|---|---|
A3 | Terry Callanan | The A3 report is a process-based tool that Toyota introduced that, on a single page, helps users derive solutions to problems, build strategic plans, or give status updates on ongoing projects. The term “A3” simply refers to the size of the paper (A3 paper is also known as 11” x 17” or B-sized paper). | |
AfterActionReviewTemplate-1 | JoAnn Sternke | This tool is used to conduct an After Action Review - to analyze an action, program or initiative to see what can be learned that can be used to drive future improvements. | |
AfterActionReviewTemplate-2 | JoAnn Sternke | This tool is used to conduct an After Action Review - to analyze an action, program or initiative to see what can be learned that can be used to drive future improvements. | |
AfterActionReviewTemplate3 | JoAnn Sternke | This tool is used to conduct an After Action Review - to analyze an action, program or initiative to see what can be learned that can be used to drive future improvements. | |
Check Sheet Workbook with Histogram, Bar Chart, and Pareto Chart | Terry Callanan | This template can be used to capture data on a Checksheet and convert it into a Histogram, Pareto Chart, or simple Bar Chart. | |
Communication Plan | Eileen Askey | Identifies required communication, frequency, and those that need to be involved in each communication. | |
Confidence Intervals for Counts | Terry Callanan | Calculator that provides confidence intervals on population counts or proportions, at specified confidence levels. | |
Control Chart | Terry Callanan | Will produce a simple control chart from a series of quantitative measurements taken over time. Enables visual determination of process control. (Potential PDU/CEU hours = 2.0) | Click for Instructional Media |
Fishbone | Terry Callanan | Visual depiction of themed areas of potential causes behind a specific effect. Typically the first step to understanding the root cause behind a problem. | |
Gantt Chart | Eileen Askey | A Gantt chart is a horizontal, timeline-based bar chart that represents a project plan in time. | |
Histogram | Terry Callanan | A graphical display of data using bars that help users visualize the central tendency and variation of the underlying process. It is similar to a Bar Chart, but a histogram groups the data into ranges. | |
Hoshin_Policy Deployment | Terry Callanan | Hoshin Kanri (also called Policy Deployment) is a method for ensuring that the strategic goals of a company are aligned, and drive progress and action, at every level within that company. This eliminates the waste that comes from inconsistent direction and poor communication. | |
Idea Prioritizer Tool 4 | Mike Caceci | Useful for determining which ideas from brainstorming and other methods could be prioritized in an objective way. | |
Impact Effort Matrix | Web -GoLeanSixSigma.com | Allows the team to plot actions on the matrix showing which items have the biggest impact with the least effort. | |
Improvement Science Process | New South Wales | Process used in the healthcare industry in Australia for process improvement initiatives | |
Lean Toolkit | Terry Callanan | This workbook contains over 25 templates helpful in conducting lean workflow analyses and Kaizen events. It includes templates for Area Profiles, Target Sheets, 5S Audits, Newspapers (for action items), Standard Work Combination, and Time Observations. | |
MBF (Management by Fact) | Terry Callanan | Like a version of A3, the Management By Fact report is a process-based tool that, on a single page, describes a problem and its steps toward resolution. The MBF process guides users to use data, measurements and root cause analysis to make smart, informed decisions. | |
Pareto | Terry Callanan | A Pareto chart is a bar graph in which the lengths of the bars represent frequency or cost (time or money), and are arranged with longest bars on the left and the shortest to the right. In this way the chart visually depicts which problems or categories are most significant. | |
Problem Statement Template | Terry Callanan, Margi Ochs | This is a fill-in-the-blank template for writing a problem statement, along with two completed examples. | |
Project Charter Template | Nancy Plews, Dick Shroyer | This template lists all of the elements of a complete project charter, with explanatory comments to help the creator. (Potential PDU/CEU hours = 0.5) | Click for Instructional Media |
Pugh Matrix | Eileen Askey | The Pugh Matrix is a criteria-based decision matrix which uses criteria scoring to determine which of several potential solutions or alternatives should be selected. | |
RASI | Terry Callanan | RASI is an acronym that describes the different level of involvement an individual or group can have for an activity (R=Responsible, A=Accountable, S=Supplier, I=Informed). When there is potential confusion as to who will make a decision, and who will do what work, a RASI chart provides a simple but powerful means to help define and clarify roles and responsibilities. | |
SIPOC -Supplier, Input, Process, Output, Customer | Margi Ochs - RIT CQAS | This tool is used by problem-solving teams across any segment (medical, financial, manufacturing) to describe and bound the process they are going to work. | |
SIPOC blank | Eileen Askey | Facilitates mapping of the high level Process, it's Suppliers and Customer, and the Inputs and Outputs | |
Scatter Plot | Terry Callanan | A scatter plot (aka scatter chart, scatter graph) uses dots to represent values for two different numeric variables. The position of each dot on the horizontal and vertical axis indicates values for an individual data point. Scatter plots display the relationship between two quantitative variables. | |
Simple Control Plan | Terry Callanan | A control plan lists the potential failure modes that may occur when trying to deliver a defect-free outcome and describes what will be done to prevent, inspect and react to such failures. Defining this for key processes is essential for maintaining process control over the long run. | |
Simple FMEA | Eileen Askey | "Failure Mode and Effects Analysis" is the process of reviewing as many components, assemblies, and subsystems as possible to identify potential failure modes in a system and their causes and effects | |
Swimlane Flowchart | Terry Callanan | A swimlane flowchart (or swimlane diagram) is a form of process map. Its value beyond the traditional flow chart is that it separates the tasks of different groups or functions into separate lanes ("swimlanes") so that it is clear what each function is responsible for. Futher, the swimlane flowchart immediately reveals when handoffs take place between groups and functions. The template enables swimlanes to be oriented either horizontally or vertically. (Potential PDU/CEU hours = 1.5) | Click for Instructional Media |
Training Matrix | Frazier Pruitt | The training matrix is a common tool to ensure employees, or volunteers, have the necessary training and have demonstrated proficiency in specific skills. It can also help identify bench strength and future training needs. Easy to scale and modify, this template can be altered to fit the needs of any organization. (Potential PDU/CEU hours = 1.0) | Click for Instructional Media |
Training Matrix - Skills and Qualifications | Ravi Alluri | The training matrix is a tool to plan and monitor the level of training in your organization. The template provides a visual indication of the depth of coverage and breadth of skillset in the particular area of focus. For example it is easy to spot the employees that are qualified to verify competency of others as well as skillset that is weak. Both pieces of information can be used to develop training plans for the organization. | |
Trend chart | Terry Callanan | Trend charts (aka as run charts) are used to show trends in quantitative data over time. | |
Warranty Liability Tool v1.0 | Richard Shroyer | Calculates warranty cost for a multi-part product, each part having a user-specified cost and life profile. Can be used to support warranty decisions or pricing of extended service plans. | |
Work Break Down Structure | Web | A work breakdown structure is a key project deliverable that organizes the team's work into manageable sections. |
